I got a slip yesterday stating that I had a certified mail delivery at the post office, which usually means something important. i was hoping it was my passport with my shiny new Swedish residence permit, so I went down there as soon as possible to pick it up. It was the passport, all right, but...my residence permit application was rejected.
I was devastated. I still am, although I'm going to appeal as much as I can. Their reasons make very little sense to me and I'm honestly kind of pissed about it.
The said that I hadn't proven that I have funds to support me through my planned study period, which is a total crock. I am approved for the Federal Stafford Loan program, which is guaranteed by the US Government, and I was awarded $20,500 per year. That more than meets the minimum requirements. I was told that "conditioned loans are not accepted" and this baffles me, as they accept study grants and scholarships. These have to be resubmitted every year depending on academic performance, the same as my loans. It's the same exact thing except I have to pay mine back to the US Government, which is none of Sweden's concern. Basically, while I have more than enough money, it's not the right TYPE of money. I am fairly livid.
They also rejected me on the grounds that my program is internet based and doesn't require my attendance in Sweden. Again, this seems pretty horse shit to me. I was admitted on a full time basis to a Swedish University, and the program makes use of a lot of technology that is utilized...on CAMPUS. I would like to have access to this and feel that I should, after having been admitted. I would also like the opportunity to interact with my instructors on a face to face basis. I have to go to Lund to defend my disseration anyway, so it's not like I never need to go to Sweden for the degree. Again, yes, I realize that it isn't classroom learning, but I think my point still stands. I was admitted to the University and should be allowed to study there if I so choose. I am appealing it based on these grounds as well as the fact that I learn so much better when I am able to have face to face clarification of materials. The fact that my degree's technology center is on campus will also play a big role in my appeal.
I've emailed several people at Lund as to what to do about the Stafford issue. This information is ridiculously hard to find online, but from the two places I was able to read anything about it I read that Stafford loans were accepted because they exactly mirror Sweden's own student loan system. i just feel that if the money is coming to me they shouldn't really deny me based on where it's coming from. It'll be there, it's guaranteed, and all study grants and scholarships have the same academic stipulations that the loans do. I'm really thinking somebdy over there fucked up. I cannot be the first US student admitted to Lund who used Stafford loans as their support. Wouldn't make much sense for them to support the program, then, would it?
Gah. I just don't know what to do. Things were going so well. I was admitted and I secured my funding, and now it isn't good enough.
