I really would have liked to start this on New Year's Day, but I figured that a bus trip to the other end of the country and back would be a complete fail in the diet regard so I just decided to start once I return. How's that for being lazy? Oh well.

I've decided to go on a detox cleanse starting as soon as possible, most likely the day I return from Lund, and to keep my diet as smart as possible after it's over. The cleanse isn't anything special, I'm just swearing off regular soda and sugary fruit juice, increasing my water intake by as much as I can, eating a lot more veggies and fish and basically just being smart when it comes to diabetic stuff. I really want to make it a habit to limit fried and overly processed foods, and to eat things as raw as I can within reason.

I plan to follow this cleanse for two weeks to start with, and will let up a bit after that but not by very much.

My biggest issue is going to be with the regular soda/energy drinks. Ideally I'd like to swear off soda altogether but I really don't see myself ever having the strength to make that happen completely, and honestly as long as I limit my consumption by a lot I shouldn't have to eliminate it entirely. I just REALLY need to cut back, by a LOT. Granted, when I'm low there's no issue at all, but when I'm not I need to exercise restraint.

I'm really not all that bad off when it comes to food. I'm not a huge fan of red meat and I love most vegetables and eat them a lot. I also enjoy fruit in limited quantities, since it makes my sugar go up a lot. I try to eat some fruit at least once a day, though. I adore fish and chicken and eat them for most of my main courses if meat is included. I eat whole grain breads and whole wheat pasta, and watch my salt intake. Yeah, I do love Cheez Doodles and those are something I'll have to limit, and I do enjoy a burger every now and again but not often enough to do any damage. Maybe once every couple weeks when I have the money to throw away. But otherwise my diet doesn't really need a ton of work, in terms of food consumption. Yeah, I could always stand to eat more veggies but that one should be really easy to accomplish. I just need to limit my potatoes since I do love them so, lol. Still don't see it being too difficult. Need to start eating breakfast and having several meals a day. That'll take awhile but it's a good goal and my damn metabolism can certainly use the jump start. lol

As I said, my main issue is the drink situation. I'm fairly sure i have an addiction to regular soda as well as to energy drinks, and since I've been able to buy what i want for awhile now, my weight has increased as evidence of this. I actually find it slightly funny, since I've been walking and climbing stairs so much here that if I weren't drinking gallons of sugary drinks I'm sure I'd have lost weight by now. Alas, I am a slave to my drink cravings. Still, at least it's not booze, although I've imbibed twice since being here and while there weren't any negative consequences those times, I REALLY have to stop that. Even though I know I'll be fine, there's no real benefit to it, and the chance of something going wrong just really isn't worth the very limited buzz I end up with. So booze is out completely, no ifs, ands or buts. It's just not worth it, and while I'm glad I gave it a shot I've had enough.

I've never been a big water fan, but I know I need it. As a diabetic I tend to get very dehydrated very quickly, and the soda only makes it worse. I do kinda like the Fun Light stuff, so I'll get a couple bottles of that every few weeks and use that as my main drink. I'll still allow myself diet soda within reason, and 2 cans/1 bottle of regular Coke a week, at least to start. I'd like to cut it out entirely but I don't want to risk going cold turkey. I'm gonna try to wean myself off instead.

Other than that, i just need to exercise more, and not just walking around town and up and down the steps to my apartment. I'm going to get a set of hand weights and a stepper machine, and will do at least 5 laps up and down my apartment steps a few times a week. Hopefully I'll be able to increase this as I go. I'm tired of feeling so sluggish and out of shape, and it's time to really start taking care of myself.

This also means making a SINCERE attempt to regulate my sleep patterns. Just because I have nothing I NEED to wake up for doesn't mean I should stay up all night goofing off and then sleep all damn day. That's got to change.

Plans sound great! I just thought - can't you drink diet sodas? They don't up your blood sugar whatsoever, and I drink diet coke almost every day. Something I want to cut down on because there's a lot of toxins and chemicals I should avoid and all, but still. While trying to cut out from the sodas, change them to diet and stick to Dextrosol Energy when you are low. That's my tip. ♥

(I've been a bad diabetic as well lately. When I was newly diagnosed I got this "insulin diary" to write in, and I still have it here. I neglected it for so long, I'm gonna start writing in it again. A great way to see if your dose is good, if you're eating good and you can even do some charts! ♥ I totally appreciate that book.)
